One of the best (and cheapest) attractions in New Zealand are the Hot Springs! Not only are there many of them, they are all unique. Here are a couple of the ones we visited.
Hot/Cold Hot Springs
Unfortunately I do not have great pics of this one. It is located right before the Wai-O-Tapu thermal wonderland. There is no signs, just a bridge your cross. Below is a built walkway into what just looks like an ordinary creek. But what is great is there are two sources of water that flow here, one cold and one hot! Pick a good spot and sit. If you get too hot, move toward the cold water, if you get too cold, move to the hot water. We met some great locals here and chatted about the local brews while shifting between temps.
Kerosene Creek (Waterfall Hot Springs)
This place was truly magical. The creek looks like a normal flowing creek with a short waterfall, but it is HOT. This place is off the beaten path. You will travel down a dirt road, riddled with pot holes. You will know you have arrived when you see the cars and a sign for the hiking trails in the area. And that is about it. You will see a nondescript creek to the right. That is Kerosene Creek. Grab your towel and head down the small trail to the waterfall. You will not be disappointed!
Hot Water Beach
Lots of fun here! The hot springs are hidden below the beach. So you have to dig to
them (it is bit of work I admit). You will want a shovel….we did not have one. Luckily some people there loaned us theirs and even more lucky another couple left while we were digging so we took that one. But it is very fun and romantic! Just imagine the best time you have had at the beach, staring out over the ocean. Now imagine yourself in a pool of hot water. Perfect!
